So much can be done with lighting. It has a profound effect on our environment, our mood, our feeling of calm and safety. This video shows an example of the use of LED lighting in a maternity ward to help make the birthing process more peaceful and enjoyable. Here is a video that plays with our perception. It was created 6 years ago, but I just saw it for the first time thanks to my friend Jessica. It is incredible that we are still working towards incorporating a significant amount of renewable energy into our electricity grid in the U.S. More videos like this one would be a great way to invite us to think about energy differently. Putting resources to use that are not being used for their full potential at all times is a necessary step. These resources are available and accessible on the surface of our planet, without having to dig and unearth. Bio diesel is oil that we would otherwise discard, wind is doing its thing any way, the sun is getting stronger and hotter as the layer between the earth surface and the sun gets thinner. It's a simple matter of evolving with the reality of our present world. Thank you to the maker's of this video for using art and creativity to shift our perception!

My eyes are trained to spot interesting light fixtures everywhere I go. I recently spent the weekend at Embassy Suites in Raleigh, North Carolina. These star shaped chandeliers are hanging in the lobby. Every room has a different style of light fixture. The choice to make them all eye catching in a different way makes me happy. Gotta love lighting design, it's the best way to create ambiance.
Power is always one of the biggest challenges of our camp, Freestyle Palace. My hope is to eventually power our lighting at night with a battery that has been solar charged during the day. This would really save the wear and tear on our smaller generators and also save us a lot of gas. I came across this video showing how to make a home made solar trailer. This would be perfect!!

The installation can happen at any time, either at the beginning of a build or home remodel, or it can be added later to provide your home with a back up power option in case of power failure. The switch provides a safe and quick way to transfer the input of power from the utility company to your personal back up generator. Here is a very clear and carefully explained video about how to install the back up generator transfer switch your self. It is made by the 'Reliance' company. I know very little about this company or their products so I am in no way endorsing the product itself. I do appreciate the thorough nature of this video.

MIT has developed a Bio Polymer film that harvests electricity through its reaction with water. This is a brand new material. As it curls and moves when introduced to tiny bits of water, sensors harness the power created by movement. This process converts mechanical energy into electricity. The efficiency is still under modifications for efficiency, but it is an entirely new and exciting material!

These LuminAID lights are solar powered led lights that are inflatable and water proof. Designed for emergency lighting, they fold up and are extremely portable. You can hang them up like a lantern AND they float! The luminAID lights are fully charged after 5 hours of sunlight. They have two light settings. The high setting light lasts for 8 hours on a full charge. They are perfect for an emergency kit and traveling. For disaster zones, approximately 50 LuminAID Lights can be packed and shipped for every 8 small conventional flashlights by volume.

LuminAID is donating one light for every light purchased through their Give Light, Get Light package.
I came across this light fixture series while I was posting to my Square Hustle tumblr. The whole series is incredible! So much detail and precision. I love the steam punk look of each light. They are all designed and created by Frank Buchwald from Berlin. There are beautiful photos of his process on the site. I recommend checking it out. He also has a really great 'blackboard' or blog with lots of wirerunner approved images of electrical situations around the world, its right up my alley!Lindsayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10868796335735916815noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9100186810783797485.post-51288709936715345812012-05-26T15:03:00.000-07:002012-05-26T15:03:54.270-07:00Charging a phone with a candle, harness that heat!

This video shows how you could harness the heat of a candle to charge your cell phone, you know if you should ever need to do so. It is a really cool explanation of heat and electrical charges, also the use of peltier devices. Check it out! This video was featured on Tinkernut and LifeHacker two really cool DIY sites. Make sure your tool chord is away from the tool. Check out this electric knife cutting its own chord. The sparkette in me gets excited and horrified at the same time! The crazy thing is folks cut through their own electrical chords while working all the time. Watch yourself.... safety is sexy.

Check out the video below of the Lichtefestival Gent
in Belgium (Festival of Lights Ghent). Using led's and
projections they were able to create an intriguing and magical
environment. The photograph above shows a hall lit by 55,000 LED's. Amazing!
It is time for all of us to pool together and help each other, the planet and beyond. It is truly amazing what humans have been able to create and destroy. It is a new era, a new time. This video shows some of the incredible electrical inventions of Nikola Tesla, a futuristic inventor who believed that power and electricity belong to all of us AND it can be harnessed in many ways, something we are still working on improving for the planets survival. I am looking forward to the days to come. Hope you enjoy the video!
