One way to ensure that fluorescent lighting is energy efficient is to change out old magnetic ballasts, like the ones shown (lower left), to electronic ballasts shown (upper right). The newer electronic ballasts convert input electricity to the operating lamp power at a higher frequency, whereas magnetic ballasts lose power in the conversion process. Magnetic ballasts are also heavier and become very hot when in use.
